Mathematical coffee question?
A coffee blend contains Sumatra beans, which cost $5/lb, and Kona beans, which cost $13/lb. If the blend costs $10/lb, how much of each type of coffee is in 50 lb of the blend?
if the proportion of Sumatra beans is S and the Kona beans is 1-S
Then the formula for the blend cost is
S x 5 + (1-S) * 13 = 10
5S + 13 – 13S = 10
3 = 8S
S = 3/8
Therefore 3/8 of the blend is Sumatra and 5/8 of the blend is Kona.
in 50lb of coffee 3/8 of 50 is 18.75 lb
